The heat was killing her. In all her time as a wanderer, Kin had rarely experienced a summer as hot as this. Previously, she had been able to charm twolegs into sheltering her during those times in their wonderfully cool nests. She may have held kittypets in contempt for their softness and general stupidity, but she did envy the ease with which they survived the harshest moons of the year. Winter, summer, the height of either could kill a cat who was ill prepared.
After the fall of the twoleg city, Kin had been unable to count on the birds that frequented certain nests, twolegs who tossed her meat scraps, or the abundant rat population in the sewers. With her focus on healing in her younger moons, the tiny black she-cat had not learned a very effective way of hunting for herself. As such, Kin was perpetually thin, though her build and muscles made others more likely to use the word slender.
A breeze ruffled her scorching fur, and her muscles uncoiled minutely. Kin kept her impassive mask firmly in place, and padded upwind. The breeze had borne the cool scent of moss and damp earth: the most promising thing she'd smelled all day.
Mood now much improved, the little rogue loped along the forest floor, navigating the undergrowth deftly. Her limbs gathered beneath her in preparation to leap a tree root, the pound of her paws not breaking rhythm. She leapt, muscles uncoiling and sending her through the air. Kin landed on the other side and paused, huffing for breath; the summer air sucked all the breath out of her.
When she looked up again, the urge to smirk tugged at her muzzle. She resisted. An offshoot of a river lay before her, gurgling cheerfully on its way over stones and debris as though the boiling air held no power over it. It was almost enough to make Kin want to wade in and dunk her head. Almost.
Kin loped ahead, eager, and paused at the edge of the river. She dipped her head and lapped from the cool waters. The black she-cat could feel the drink sliding down her throat and into her stomach. Her burnt orange eyes flickered shut for a moment. They snapped open a heartbeat later, once more alert and blank, constantly roving for potential dangers.
In unclaimed lands, Kin feared no danger. Her skills as a healer made her an invaluable ally, as infections and diseases were a primary killer of loners. Cats could not afford her ire, displeasure, or irritation. But here, in Clan territory, her status as a healer meant nothing. Only her rogue classification mattered.
Despite that, Kin wetted her paw and began to groom her face, using the water to cool it. Her long tail wrapped neatly around her paws, and she tamped down the throaty purr that threatened to break free. Finding this little area was a boon, one that she could only hope would not be disturbed.

Foxstar appeared out of the tunnel and entering the forest. The burning heat of the sun made Foxstar's thick bushy tail itch considering its the thickest part of his whole pelt. He paused and looked up to the sky. It can barely be seen by the dense trees. They were so close that they literally tangle one another. The sun's light could barely reach through if at all. Despite that the heat is ridiculous. I'm glad I'm not WindClan, Foxstar thought as he carried on. WindClan are the only cats that live in the open and would be the ones facing the worst of this scorching heat. RiverClan however, might be happy considering this is a perfect time to go swimming. Foxstar's fur bristled at the thought of going in water and shivered despite the heat.
Since ShadowClan territory receives the least light the territory is normally cool. He traveled through the darkest parts of the forest, and began hunting. Foxstar didn't come across any of his Clanmates, most would be in their dens sleeping or out patrolling. No one really needs to hunt in the day since they mostly do their hunting at night when the forest is its darkest. Those were are up in the day would be doing some training or doing border patrols. Just because ShadowClan normally sleeps in the day and roam at night doesn't mean the other Clans would.
The only reason Foxstar is up and hunting at this time is he couldn't sleep. Ever since Foxstar was a kit he had conflict sleeping. In fact the only thing that can get him to sleep is exhaustion. However, his sleeping problems have always been mild and easy to cope, but today he can't seem to get comfortable. Oh how he wished his insomnia wasn't so strong today. He would be out of the heat and in his cool. Well, at least the ground is still cool and soggy as always. Foxstar managed to catch two mice and was stalking a frog near the river when he caught an unfamiliar scent. His fur bristled and he double checked to make sure. No, he isn't mistaken. There is a rogue in ShadowClan territory! Considering where he is and the strength of the scent the intruder is well passed the borders. His pupils turn to slits and a growl coursed through his throat. Foxstar checked two or three more times to make sure it isn't the cats he is thinking of. The intruder is a she-cat with a scent of herbs like medicine cats but had no Clan scent. He thought about that one she-cat he met once and compared the two scents. No, it isn't the same cat.
Regardless, this rogue has trespassed and must be dealt with. He followed the scent, careful to stay downwind. Foxstar checked a few more times in case there are more rogues in the area. None, this cat is alone. This cat is either lost or very foolish, he thought. There's no need to get a patrol if its just one cat. Foxstar realized now where the cat exactly is. The cat is very close to Stonehills. How dare this cat get so deep into ShadowClan territory! Foxstar quickened his pace and came across and noticed a small black she-cat drinking at the river. Foxstar narrowed his eyes and padded out of the shadows. "You are in ShadowClan territory! Leave!" he hissed.WORDS. 611 OOC. Kin contemplated wading into the river until the cool water lapped at her legs just under her belly. The thought of the relief from the heat was very tempting, and she toyed with the idea a bit more thoroughly. Then, the wind changed and a moist breeze brought with it the scent of a tomcat, with the faint scents of many other cats intertwined with it. In her experience, that led to one conclusion: Clan cats.
Mentally, Kin hissed in annoyance. Outwardly, she continued washing as though she had no idea she had been spotted. Her hackles remained smooth against her back, and her ears remained in a relaxed pose.
"You are in ShadowClan territory! Leave!"
The hissed order leaked out of the shadows behind her, and the little she-cat finished grooming her right ear and calmly lowered her paw to the ground. She shifted her weight to her back paws, and twisted her head around.
A red tom stood a few fox-lengths away, glaring at her. His posture screamed hostility that was matched by the prominent presence of the emotion churning in his green eyes. Kin's burnt orange eyes swept over his musculature and stance, gauging that he was old enough to be a seasoned fighter, and strong enough to severely hurt her should he attack. Intelligent and skilled in herbal remedies she may be, but Kin was not even much of a hunter let alone a fighter.
"I was unaware that the waters were claimed," she meowed evenly. Kin rose enough to turn her body and sit facing the ShadowClan tom. Scenarios flashed through her head in rapid succession, and each fighting turnout was roughly the same: her limping off to tend her wounds, or left to rot by the river. Logically, Kin's only option was to talk her way out of the situation.
Hopefully, she hadn't run into one of the more bloodthirsty cats of ShadowClan. There was a reason it was the only Clan she could remotely stand; their plotting, subterfuge, and stealth tactics would win her respect if they did not also follow the rigid Code laid out by their long-since rotted ancestors.

His eyes never left the intruder who stood before him. The small black she-cat finished grooming one of her ears and set her paw slowly down with the other before turning her head to look at him. The she-cat's orange colored eyes bore down on him. Foxstar narrowed his green eyes and waited for her answer. Two things he noticed about this she-cat as he waited was her size, for a cat she is small, smaller than even his brother Littlefang. The second thing is her muscles and slender form. She doesn't look very strong but who knows. "I was unaware that the waters were claimed," she meowed calmly.
She rose to her paws to shift her body around to face him. Foxstar bristled at her ignorance and disrespect. Her ignorance for entering the territory, knowing full well she was trespassing and the disrespect of the border. He dug his claws in the soft earth and tried to keep himself calm, though all he wants is to claw this she-cat. However, Foxstar isn't like some warriors who would attack first. Even though Foxstar isn't the best fighter in the Clan he knew he can beat this cat with ease. You don't need to be a strong warrior to win fights, all you really need is wit. There is a possibility that this cat too is very clever but with Foxstar's training she still wouldn't be a match for him. After all Foxstar hasn't stopped his battle training the moment he became a warrior, he trained almost every day to keep his skills sharp.
"Oh really? Then I guess we both are trespassing on RiverClan territory, this river is went through from RiverClan territory." Foxstar said sarcastically. It's true that farther upriver it goes into RiverClan territory. "After all, unlike us they use the rivers more than the fish," he added. RiverClan use waters like these for swimming and fishing.WORDS. 336 OOC. None THEME. Forever Can Be~ Ashes Divide

Her expression remained unchanged as the red tom's eyes flashed anger and his claws sank into the soft earth. From the way his eyes raked over her body, Kin was being appraised for fighting skills. She knew she would be found lacking, especially in comparison to a cat who had been trained from six moons of age to be an expert in combat, an expert in wounding and killing less skilled rogues such as herself.
The tom displayed self-control she rarely saw in Clan cats, his muscles flexing and fluttering with his restraint. Kin knew very few cats who could mask such signs of emotion and thought. She herself had only mastered smoothing over involuntary motions and expressions a few moons ago.
"Oh really? Then I guess we both are trespassing on RiverClan territory, this river is went through from RiverClan territory. After all, unlike us they use the rivers more than the fish."
Kin very nearly snorted with amusement. Instead, she cocked her head slightly, ears perking up. There was an image. She happened to know from previous forays into Clan territories that the RiverClan cats, though frequent swimmers and adept fishers, were very much land-based creatures.
"Do they really?"
she mewed, her tone suggesting surprise. "I was under the impression that they had no gills. How the fish must envy them, for the use of both land and water so freely." A little chuckle slipped out at the image of a fish-headed feline sliding down the waterfall and blinking wide, round amber eyes at them. Kin quirked her muzzle in a little smirk, to pass the amusement off as at her own joke. "Perhaps we are tresspassing. Any moment now, a group of their cats will come swimming down the waterfall and flap their fins at us until we flee from terror," Kin mewed drily. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

Okay maybe that wasn't the best phrase to describe RiverClan but it was the only thing that popped in his head at that moment. After all he should know since Blossombranch was RiverClan. An image of her appeared in his head from the last time he had seen her. It was when she gave him a life. "Do they really? I was under the impression that they had no gills. How the fish must envy them, for the use of both land and water so freely." She said, acting all surprised. Foxstar shrugged in response but was mostly a cover as he tried to push the memories of Blossombranch to the back of his head.
"Who knows, they have gills hidden somewhere," he shot back. No way is he going to lose a battle of wits, not today anyway. She gave a small chuckle and he doubted it was what he said. Maybe she was imagining something amusing? The she-cat's muzzle quirked to a smirk. Foxstar gave a huff of amusement; holding back a purr.
"Perhaps we are trespassing. Any moment now, a group of their cats will come swimming down the waterfall and flap their fins at us until we flee from terror" she mewed.
Foxstar's eyes rolled and he turned his head away, looking behind him. He wondered if any of his Clanmates would be coming here. Since they are close to Stonehills there might be mentors coming here to train their apprentices. Hopefully they all decided to wait till dusk for that. They are too far from the borders for any border patrols to spot them and he doubted there would be any hunting patrols out till well passed sunset. Still, there is always a chance. He would like to deal with this on his own after all. He turned back to the she-cat "I would love to see that," Foxstar said. "However, you are still trespassing in ShadowClan territory. Now please leave." He added more politely, flicking his bushy white tipped fox like tail into the forest in the direction of the borders between ShadowClan and the Forest of Ruins. After all most rogues are discovered in that part of the forest than anywhere else. Foxstar's eyes burned into the she-cat's orange eyes with a serious look.

Kin rarely enjoyed encounters with Clan cats. However, this one seemed to have an actual sense of humor, which put him a whisker above the putrid scum he called his fellows. From the way he glanced anxiously over his shoulder, the red tomcat worried he might be found fraternizing with the enemy, as it were.
She shifted to stand on all four paws just as he spoke. "I would love to see that. However, you are still trespassing in ShadowClan territory. Now please leave." He gestured in the direction of the ruins where she made her home.
Her orange eyes blanked completely of emotion. The hints of amusement that had twisted her delicately angled features vanished. His eyes were truly serious and his tone polite. He meant business.
The entire reason Kin had wandered into ShadowClan's territory was to find a good place to cool off. There was no escaping the brutal sun in the ruins. Too many exposed spaces existed, and wherever there was shade, stone had caught and magnified the heat of the day.
"I wish I could," she meowed seriously, allowing the sincerity of her next words to shine in her eyes. "If I go back to the ruins I will be broiled alive. For my own survival, I must decline to leave."
What she had presented was a perfectly reasonable argument for her remaining on the red tom's territory. Unless, of course, their little witty repartee had not endeared her to him in the least, and she was still a threat to be eliminated in his eyes.
Kin was not quite used to being considered a legitimate threat by cats she first met. They were usually put at slight ease by her small size and relatively soft muscles, further lulled by the false faces she presented to get what she wanted from them. It was a decidedly disconcerting sensation, but no trace of her thoughts showed on her face, other than the serious sincerity she allowed through.

He isn't worried that cats would think he is fraternizing with a cat. After all it isn't his first time he being with a cat outside of the Clan and Gatherings. Besides, he isn't flirting he just doesn't want a fight. If any of his Clanmates come and see this cat they will attack her without a second thought. Even though he is a leader if he stops one of his Clanmates from attacking this cat they will want to know why. Foxstar isn't really in the mood to deal with that if it ends up that way.
The she-cat's face changed from amused to serious. " I wish I could," she meowed in a serious tone. "If I go back to the ruins I will be broiled alive. For my own survival, I must decline to leave."
Foxtar's eyes narrowed as they gazed into this cats eyes. She isn't kidding... He held back any physical reaction and thought how lucky he was he isn't a rogue. After all he learned a long time ago that he had a rogue mother who gave him up. Of course, no one knew about this, everyone believes that he is Shadefall's son, just what his father had wanted. If that rogue haven't gave him up he knew he would most likely living the same life as this she-cat's life. "I doubt there isn't any caves or water there that you can drink," Foxstar mewed. "There is the Mooncave after all, it has water and everything," he added. It's true, deep in the Forest of Ruins is the Mooncave. The medicine cats travel there each half moon and sometimes the Clan leaders would journey there to speak to StarClan or receive their nine lives. Foxstar had journeyed there a moon ago for his nine lives after all. The place had a lot of water and was very cool. Even though the Clans go there time to time it isn't really claimed by any of them like the Elderoak.

The habits of Clan cats never ceased to surprise her. Here she was, on this tom's land, and he was suggesting ways she might live with the brutal heat conditions. But his suggestion.... "I doubt there isn't any caves or water there that you can drink. There is the Mooncave after all, it has water and everything."
Ludicrous.
He'd seen her build, the way she sat still, body completely under her control. Perhaps he'd interpreted that as a sign of martial skill. Perhaps he was just ignorant of rogue society, which was a distinct possibility. Just as she learned just enough of the Clans to live near them without too much conflict, so too the Clans might know only enough to keep rogues out of their territories.
"Clans are not the only ones who claim territories,"Kin meowed quietly. The cavern he called the Mooncave had been claimed by a tom nearly twice her size and incredibly muscular. If she tried to go anywhere near the cavern when he was healthy, she'd be chased out by fang and claw. She was continually surprised that the tom's nocturnal hunting habits kept him away from the Clan cats who used it as a sacred ground.
"The cave you speak of is claimed. I have nowhere else to go." Again, serious sincerity was the emotion present on her face. Underneath, Kin was becoming annoyed. She did not care to trot through unbearably hot ruins, stone burning the pads of her paws as she searched for shelter that might not exist.
Kin did not come as far as she had by taking undue risks. If she was going to travel into a risky area, she would prefer that there was as low a chance of detection as possible. Using what little knowledge she had of the Clans of the forest, she'd determined that night-favoring ShadowClan was her best bet to escape both the heat and detection.

"Clans are not the only ones who claim territories," she mewed quietly. He almost didn't catch what she said. Of course Foxstar knew that the Clans aren't the only ones who claim territory. He just thought there were at least some water somewhere in the Forest of Ruins. She could try going to the lake or in twolegplace since the main river from the forest enters into the place. Foxstar didn't suggest that however. He knew there are many dogs in that place and since all the twolegs have gone the dogs are no longer leashed. "The cave you speak of is claimed. I have nowhere else to go."
He wanted to suggest the lake but thought twice about it. Foxstar figured she must have already thought about the lake. He wondered what he should do. The warrior code demands that he drives out any trespassers... which he is doing but just not in a violent way. Foxstar knew he couldn't let this cat roam about ShadowClan wherever she wants, even if its in the day time. That would be going against the code. However, it isn't the code he is worried most about, he never truly cared about some of the code but some does make sense. No, it was how everyone would see ShadowClan if they knew that ShadowClan lets cats roam their territory. The Clans would surely think ShadowClan weak and worse try and steal territory from them. He has no doubt the other Clans will try to steal the Abandoned Twolegnest. After all there are many rare herbs in that nest. How many of his Clanmates will die because of this? No, he doesn't care about the warrior code, he only cares about protecting the Clan and the cats in it that he loves.
Foxstar sighed. If he can't let her roam the territory as she pleases or drive her out of the territory only to send her to her death then maybe... Well it didn't hurt to ask. Hopefully, the Clans won't think ShadowClan is turning into ThunderClan. He shivered, unable to suppress it. "Alright, you can roam ShadowClan territory as much as you want," Foxstar mewed with a shrug, sitting down. "Only if you agree to join ShadowClan that is," Foxstar added.WORDS. 378 OOC. None THEME. The red tom regarded her calculatingly as she explained her situation. Thoughts flickered through his eyes at a rapid pace, and then he shivered. For a brief moment, Kin wondered why. Then, he spoke. "Alright, you can roam ShadowClan territory as much as you want. Only if you agree to join ShadowClan that is."
Instantly, her mind erupted into chaos, only her habitual expression of calm keeping the storm from reflecting in her face, posture or eyes. Kin, join one of the Clans she reviled? Sacrilege! She might as well paw at some twoleg's door until they took pity on her and allowed her to become their kittypet!
Anger, disgust, and frustration roared in her brain. The emotions flashed through her eyes for a moment, before the tiny she-cat automatically repressed the expressions. As though his words weren't utterly horrific, the red tom sat and regarded her.
When she fully registered the weight of his gaze over the yowling storm of negative emotions, a blanket of calm slid over them. Cool reason pushed aside her emotional responses and forced Kin to view his offer from a logical standpoint.
She could barely hunt well enough to sustain herself in greenleaf, when prey was plentiful, let alone leaf-bare. The greencough and whitecough outbreaks during the season were often the only reason she survived.
She could not fight to save her life. Certainly, Kin could hold her own for a moment or two, usually just long enough to calculate the most efficient escape route.
However, what she could do was work with herbs.
But the Clans had a position dedicated to that, a position that was always filled. Perhaps she'd be lucky, and ShadowClan was in need of a healer. For all she knew, the scent of herbs that perpetually clung to her pelt could be the only reason the tom had made the offer he did.
And, as another point to consider, not just any cat could make such an offer, under the Clans' ruling style. He must be important, possibly the leader. In fact, the more she considered it, the more sense it made for him to be a leader. He held himself confidently, had no issues making eye contact, and seemed to have the power to make decisions on a whim.
Swallowing a growl, Kin knew the answer to her next question would seal her fate. She had all but already agreed to his offer. It was logical. Joining ShadowClan would ensure she survived this winter, when many of her usual patients had migrated to new areas.
"What use does your Clan have for a rogue healer?"
she questioned. If he couldn't tell her she'd be a useful healer, she would decline and follow the river down to the lake, where she could find a small spot not taken by dog or cat, if she was lucky. Kin refused to be treated as a kit, despite the fact that she was smaller than the majority of new Clan apprentices. If he told her she must become some warrior and follow their wretched Code, she would turn her back on ShadowClan and its territory, and take her chances with a world that was poised to shred her. [/blockquote] Word Count: 523 OOC: Damn. The atmosphere became silent as the she-cat looked into Foxstar's eyes. She showed little response after he spoke and he can only bet that she is holding it back. After all, he does it too. Foxstar began to wonder... why does he want this cat to join? He can tell simply by looking at her she won't make a good warrior. No... there is something else, he just doesn't know what.
"What use does your Clan have for a rogue healer?" she asked.
Foxstar blinked and thought she was some type of healer. After all she smells of herbs like a medicine cat. He thought for a moment. ShadowClan already has a medicine cat, she could train if she wanted to but he doubted she would be suitable for medicine cat. It takes more than healing with herbs. Medicine cats are guided by StarClan. Besides, to let a rogue become a medicine cat apprentice just like that would be unwise. "I don't think becoming a medicine cat would be a good idea..." Foxstar started, then paused. "But you can stay in ShadowClan, learn how to hunt and feed the Clan. You don't have to learn to fight if you don't want to and I bet our medicine cat would enjoy some help now and then." Foxstar explained. He figured the she-cat might be reluctant so instead he will ease her into the Clan and she can choose then if she wished to stay or not, and maybe become a full warrior if she wished.WORDS. 254 OOC. He seemed surprised that she was a healer. Kin was just as surprised by the small flash of irritation his surprise caused. She'd thought him more observant than he was, clearly. Why overestimating a cat would cause her to be irritated at the cat in question rather than at herself, she did not know.
"I don't think becoming a medicine cat would be a good idea.... But you can stay in ShadowClan, learn how to hunt and feed the Clan. You don't have to learn to fight if you don't want to and I bet our medicine cat would enjoy some help now and then."
Help a Clan cat. Sure, when they needed her long-rotted corpse to poison their addle-brained kits. However, the red tom was offering her the opportunity to learn to support herself fully. If she did not need the aid of other cats to survive- if she could rely on her hunting skills through leaf-bare- she could demand more from those who she treated.
She could also leave at any moment she chose. The idea that the cats of the Clan might eventually accept her as one of their own did not occur to her. Kin simply realized that it would be just as easy to slip out when all the cats were asleep and leave her stint in ShadowClan behind as it would be to turn around and pad away now.
Weighing her decision on her tongue, Kin rose and padded slowly, deliberately, toward the tom. She paused just a mouse-length away, electrically aware of how much larger he was than her, how greatly her size resembled that of a kit, even if her build was that of a full-grown and comely she-cat. Her new leader, she supposed, though the thought rankled. He best not presume much authority over her, or he'd find out firstpaw just how kindly rogues took to cats trying to control them.
"I accept your offer. Perhaps your medicine cat and I have knowledge of value to each other." Kin did not mention his comment about learning how to hunt and feed the Clan. If she caught something for ShadowClan, ShadowClan would feed her. It was as straightforward as any of her contracts with her various patients. A service for a service.

He sat there waiting for this cat's answer. As he waited he thought about what the Clan would think if she accepted. After all the Clan doesn't run charity and if she wants to stay in the Clan she would have to work with it. Foxstar tried to remember the last outsider they brought into the Clan, but that was several seasons ago, before his parents were born.
The she-cat got to her paws and padded up to him till she was a mouse-length from him. From this distance he could clearly figure her size. She is definitely small, almost the size of a kit but with the maturity of an adult. In fact she looks the same size as Foxstar's brother Littlefang. His brother was named little since he was the runt of the litter and has always been small. Many cats believed Littlefang would turn to be a medicine cat because of his tiny size. However, no one knew more than Foxstar how much Littlefang wanted to be a warrior. In fact Littlefang and him had often trained together when apprentices to find their own way of fighting thanks to Stoneblaze's advice.
"I accept your offer. Perhaps your medicine cat and I have knowledge of value to each other." She mewed.
Foxstar simply dipped his head in a respectful manner. "That is good to know," Foxstar mewed in a polite tone. "My name is Foxstar, and yours?" he introduced himself. He didn't say that he was ShadowClan leader; he bet she had already figured it out. And if she didn't... well she will find out eventually.WORDS. 268 OOC. Foxstar dipped his head respectfully to her. Kin flicked an ear and bobbed her head shallowly, the closest her pride would allow her to a respectful nod. "That is good to know. My name is Foxstar, and yours?"
The tiny she-cat setteled back into a sitting position, sensing that they would be taking a while to get around to ShadowClan's camp. "I am Kin," she mewed solemnly. Heat began to build up under her fur again, and she blinked. One ear twitched, and her tail, which had been neatly wrapped around her paws, uncurled and swayed behind her in the hopes of a breeze.
It did not escape her notice, though, that Foxstar had introduced himself without mentioning that he led his Clan. She tilted her head to one side slightly and leaned in until their noses were just a tail's width apart. "You are the leader of your Clan, are you not?" Kin meowed softly.
Her voice, which typically held a low, throaty tone, was slightly rougher than usual with the return of excessive heat to her body. Kin did not like the fact that she had a tell that she could not cover. However, most toms seemed to take the lower register as flirtation, which was just fine with her. Some part of her wondered how Foxstar thought of the sound of her voice. Another part of her wondered why she cared.
OOC: Not a problem ^^ I understand getting really busy. I don't even think I'll be on tomorrow. Baby's first real Valentine's.
